FINANCIAL OVERVIEW

MENTAL HEALTH FINANCIAL OVERIEW

MENTAL HEALTH FINANCIAL OVERIEW

From a general, overview perspective of mental health services’ financial advice the following information is provided:

FEDERAL:  The federal government does not directly provide mental health related financial assistance.  Federal funding/assistance for mental health is provided through government programs such as Medicare (senior citizens), Medicaid (citizens with disabilities) and The Affordable Care Act (impoverished citizens). The federal government does have disability and supplemental income programs. Those programs are: The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR):   https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/disability/

STATE:    State provided mental health services and assistance varies dramatically, as does individual state’s financial contribution to mental health care.   Please utilize internet searches to identify programs and assistance available in your state.  Please click on the icons below for the states of Missouri and Tennessee for more information about those states.

COUNTY:   State funded mental health programs are often administered on  a county level basis, then often performed by subcontracted, private mental health service providers.  The number of County operated mental health facilities located within a given county/regions are most likely determined by population density.  Within a given county, programs will be administered on a consistent, across the board basis.

Again, please utilize internet searches to identify services and/or facilities operating within your county; then contact and consult directly with the involved service provider(s).

CITY:   There are various for profit and non profit mental health service providers available within different municipalities.  These service providers will most likely specialize in a specific area or areas of mental health concern.  The BMS Project provides suggested first-step guidance for the metropolitan area of Nashville, TN and Kansas City, Missouri subcategorized by the type of mental health concern for which assistance is being sought.  Additional specific, by-market, first-step mental help guides will added in the future.

INSURANCE:   For profit health insurance plans include defined coverage for mental health services, along with healthy lifestyle programs.  Please consult with heath insurance providers regarding the service plans that they offer in your area.
