STEP ONE: OVERVIEW FOR YOUNG COMPETITORS

Sports and competition mimic the characteristics of life.  Much of what we provide on this site is directed toward Advocates – particularly Parents and Coaches — what about the competitors …what about you?  As young athletes/competitors mature through the stages of growing up, from children, to adolescents, to teenagers, then young adults – many changes occur – physically, intellectually and emotionally.

We wish to speak with you directly.  While we endorse the role of parents to support and help shepherd you along both your competitive and life journeys, only you know how you feel.  Accordingly, the number one advice that we offer adult advocates is to observe, talk to you and to act, if needed.  You are not alone!  As you become a legal adult (18 years of age and above), you are granted legal rights of privacy that are protected.

However lonely, isolated and depressed you become, you are not alone.  Isolation, competitive stresses, negative social media and world events can combine to make you feel insulated from compassionate, caring support.  Don’t let the insulating, emotional cocoon compromise your self-esteem and life enjoyment.

At The BMS Project, Inc. we strive to educate all parties associated with youth sports and other competitive youth activities regarding the role of mental health and the perils of self-harm impulses.   We provide suggestions to create positive competitive environments and experiences for young people to grow, learn and guide their personal life paths forward.

Let us repeat and emphasize – ONLY YOU KOW HOW YOU FEEL!  Be sure to share your feelings with those that you trust.  Do not assume that those that appear to be supportive are in fact concerned about your welfare.  Can you be misled and betrayed?  Yes …and that really hurts when it happens.  However close or even estranged your relationship with your parents might become over time, bear in mind that you are their child and that most often involves a deep, eternal sacred bond.

INTRODUCTION TO THE HIERARCHY OF MATURATION IN SPORTS AND LIFE

In this Step Two section, we discuss the chronological development and challenges of maturing as both a person and as a young athlete or competitor.  Our approach of providing an early step-by-step, sequential, practical approach to our mental/behavioral health advisory/educational services is once again utilized; as we address the various emotional and mental/behavioral health issues associated with growing-up and becoming an adult – both in life and participating in sports/competitive activities.

Taking what is complex and simplifying it isn’t simple, but we attempt to provide useful, practical informative guidance to educate and inform users regarding their particular area(s) of interest.

As a young athlete or young person entering this site, please accept our gesture of informative good will; then use our library and other resources to expand your knowledge, so that you may gain a better understanding and insights to what contributes to feelings of accomplishment and self-esteem or harmful, consequences through your participation in sports and other non-athletic, competitive activities.

It is our fervent hope that we can contribute to your ability to make good decisions for yourself.  If you have stumbled and lost your way in life, we are not judgmental and/or involved with assigning labels.  We strive to help you get back-up on your feet and set you on your way to a happier, life fulfilling future.

We place special emphasis on the role of parents during the early formative years of their children …and feel that their imparted values and morals can assist individuals throughout their entire adult lives.  We allude to positive, caring, passionate advocates, versus users that are more vested in their own gain, motives and self enrichment.
