Selecting a Therapist<\/span><\/b>

Any time we see a new health care provider, we have questions.\u00a0\u00a0We should have questions, simply because we wonder what may happen to us and how our needs may be met by someone we don\u2019t know.\u00a0\u00a0So, whether, the need related to a broken bone or an unusual blotch on your skin or too much anxiety, questions arise.\u00a0\u00a0This is good.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Tip #1: Keep your needs in mind.<\/span><\/b><\/p>

As you anticipate getting help from a mental health care provider, the most important thought is this one: Based on your needs, you have questions.\u00a0\u00a0The list of questions below are simply a way to help you to clarify your own questions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The primary obligation of a professional therapist is to help you. Therefore, getting your questions answered\u2014before therapy begins\u2014is important.\u00a0\u00a0In anticipation of speaking with a therapist, prepare your questions.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Tip #2: Visit the<\/span><\/b>\u00a0website of a prospective provider<\/b>.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

You will likely have many of your questions answered.\u00a0\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Tip #3: Ask questions<\/span><\/b>\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/b>lots of questions.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/b><\/p>

The questions, below, come to you as suggestions.\u00a0\u00a0Some of them may be important to you, while others may not.\u00a0\u00a0View them carefully and select the ones that you believe will likely help you to identify a therapist who meets your needs. This list of questions very likely includes more than you should ask \u2014 select those for which you need answers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Keep in mind that you should ask and receive satisfactory answers to your questions before you authorize treatment.\u00a0As Tip #1 states, your needs matter.\u00a0Keep them in mind and ask questions that will help you to meet them.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

Education, Experience & Treatment Style:<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>

  • <\/u>Would you describe your education?\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Are you licensed to practice in (my) the state?\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>How many years have you been practicing?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>What are your special areas of practice?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>I\u2019m here for ____________ (your problem).\u00a0\u00a0Would you describe how your education and training relate to this problem?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Have you worked with people who have my problem?\u00a0\u00a0Do you have any special training with this problem?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Can you describe your experience in working with clients with my kind of problem?\u00a0\u00a0How long have you been treating people with this kind of problem?\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Do you have any certifications for treating my kind of problem?\u00a0\u00a0While there are numerous certifications out there, they are not available for most mental-emotional problems.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Would you describe your treatment style?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Do you involve me in a treatment plan?\u00a0\u00a0How do you do this?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>How do you make treatment decisions?\u00a0\u00a0Do you use measurable criteria to make treatment decisions?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Do you use treatment standards from published clinical practice guidelines to guide your treatment?\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Would you describe your treatment approach?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>What kinds of treatments do you use?\u00a0\u00a0Have your preferred treatments proven to be effective with my kind of problem?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/u>How do you work with other health care providers, including physicians?\u00a0\u00a0(This question may be important, if you need both counseling and medication.\u00a0In this case, your counselor and your physician should know what each other is doing.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>If you are overseeing the treatment of your child, you may want to know how your child\u2019s mental health care may need to be coordinated with school-related personnel.\u00a0\u00a0This kind of question may be asked in many different ways.\u00a0\u00a0You may need to ask, \u201cHow will you work with my child\u2019s school and teachers?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0You may want to add questions about how the counselor will work with coaches, too.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>I hope that we do not have any emergencies, but if we do, how do you handle emergencies?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>Based on my problem, how much therapy do you recommend?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
  • <\/u>If I need a referral to someone else, such as a specialist who can help me, is this something with which you help?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li><\/ul>

    • <\/u>If we exchange e-mail messages, are there fees for them?\u00a0\u00a0If there is a fee for them, does insurance cover the cost?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
    • <\/u>I have __________ insurance.\u00a0\u00a0Do you take this kind of insurance?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
    • <\/u>Who deals with my insurance company?\u00a0\u00a0What do I need to do, to ensure that my insurance company pays for treatment?<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>
    • <\/u>How do you handle insurance claims?\u00a0\u00a0Do you file claims?\u00a0\u00a0Or, do I need to do this?\u00a0\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/li>

      Understanding an Informed Consent Document<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>

      Your mental health care provider should provide an\u00a0informed consent document<\/b>\u00a0for you to sign so that you authorize the provider to treat you.\u00a0\u00a0The informed consent document should give you details about the benefits and risks of treatment, approximately how long treatment will last, and more.\u00a0\u00a0The informed consent document or another document that your provider gives you should include information about fees and charges, if any, when appoints are missed.\u00a0\u00a0The informed consent document will answer many of your questions.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>

      Also, the informed consent document will likely tell you about the rare circumstances under which information about you may be shared with others.\u00a0\u00a0Except under rare circumstances, your provider cannot share information about you, unless you authorize such sharing.\u00a0\u00a0If your provider sees a need to share information about you, your authorization is necessary.\u00a0\u00a0Typically, your authorization is issued in a\u00a0release of information document<\/b>\u00a0that you sign.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
